"In a typical week at Georgia Tech, I first and foremost attend classes. My classes always come before extracurricular activities, but I make sure that I am fully involved in the activities that I do participate in. On Monday evenings, I attend the Minority Recruitment Team meeting. As vice president, I help to make sure all the key points of the meeting have been addressed, and if the president isn't available to host the meeting, I will. During the week, I also help to plan events and make arrangements as a member of the Connect With Tech Advisory Board. I also go to work on campus as an office assistant at the East Community Housing Office. On weekends, I hang out with my friends, go to the movies, or visit my family.
The most rewarding experiences I've had at Tech were at Minority Recruitment Team events. The fall semester after the Welcome Weekend event is really rewarding when I see the girls I hosted as visitors here at Tech. One girl said that she came to Georgia Tech because of the great time she had at Welcome Weekend. It made me feel really good, because I know that I'm part of the reason why she had a great time. At another event, a reception for prospective students and their parents, I saw a student who was a senior at my old high school, and not many people from my high school come to Tech. I could see just how excited he was to see me, another person from his high school doing well at Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech has been the best decision for me because it allows me to pursue any subject I want to learn more about. I want to become more cultured, have knowledge about many different subjects, and try to apply all this information toward my career goals; and Georgia Tech allows me to do this. The diversity of cultures at Georgia Tech also adds to my college experience. I have been interested in the Japanese culture since I was a little girl living in Hawaii for a few years, and I took my first Japanese language class over the summer. Learning about the language and the culture of Japan opened me up to new ideas. I'm not fluent in the language, but I believe that learning the language and culture helped me to be a better, more well-rounded person.
Last semester in LCC 3710 (Principles in Interactive Design), my professor introduced me to the Flash program. After I got comfortable with the program, I wanted to do many things in Flash, and it has inspired me to create small games and start on little projects of my own using Flash. I also create machinima videos using Sims 2 when I have spare time. I enjoy this because I am able to contribute to the Sims 2 community more actively, and it is rewarding when someone compliments my work."
Pull out quote: "Knowing changes everything because you've become exposed to brand new ideas that you may never have thought about. By learning something new, you can do more than you could before, and the more you know, the more you can do on your own to become a leader."
