Georgia Tech Frequently Asked Question Responses

We look at areas of an applicant’s background in making our admission decisions – academic record/GPA, SAT/ACT scores, leadership activities and the application essay. These criteria are all critical to being competitive for admission to Georgia Tech.

3. What is your policy on AP/IB Scores?

Georgia Tech accepts and awards course credit for many forms of Advanced Placement. For a complete list of exams and further information, please visit www.admiss.gatech.edu/ap .

4. What are Tech’s application deadlines?

Our application is typically available online in mid-August at www.apply.gatech.edu. Scholarship Program (www.psp.gatech.edu) and January 15th for Freshman Admission only. Our application is available for submission or download at www.apply.gatech.edu .

In order to be eligible for the President’s Scholarship, our premier merit-based scholarship, you must apply for admission by October 31st. Otherwise, our final deadline for freshman admission applications is January 15th.

5. Does Georgia Tech have an Early Action/Early Decision deadline?

Georgia Tech does not any type of Early Action or Early Decision process. We have two deadlines for applications – October 31st for the President’s Scholarship and January 15 for regular admission.

6. What is the minimum required GPA and SAT/ACT score for admission?

With a competitive admission process, Georgia Tech does not have “minimum” requirements for admission; rather, admission decisions are made based on how an applicant compares to the overall pool of applicants. Most students who are ultimately competitive for admission will have at least a B average and take challenging courses at their high school. Last year, the middle 50% SAT score was 1270-1410 (Math and Critical Reading only). A profile of our Freshman class may be found online: www.admiss.gatech.edu/studentstats .

7. Can I make an appointment to interview with a counselor?

Georgia Tech does not include personal interviews as part of the admission process. We do, however, encourage you to learn more about Tech by attending one of our weekly information sessions and campus tours. 8. How do I register for classes?

During Freshman Orientation (FASET) you will be instructed in all the different things you need to know including the registration for classes and academic advising. The Georgia Tech Course Catalog and schedule of classes may be found online at https://oscar.gatech.edu .

9. What happens if I am not selected as a semi-finalist for President’s Scholarship?

It is important to know that the President’s Scholarship process is a separate process from your admission decision. Students who are not selected to proceed in the President’s Scholarship process will remain in the pool of applicants for admission. The majority of our admission decisions will be made after our final deadline for applications (January 15th). Therefore, most decisions are sent by mail in late February to the middle of March. www.psp.gatech.edu .

10. When is the deadline to submit SAT or ACT scores?

The SAT or ACT should be scheduled in the spring of the junior year and may be taken again through the December test date of the senior year. December scores will not be considered for the President’s Scholarship competition. January test results may not meet the admission application deadline. Official test scores must be sent electronically directly to Georgia Tech from the testing agency; we will not accept scores submitted on transcripts or from personal score reports. Georgia Tech’s code for the SAT is 5248. For the ACT our code is 0818.

11. What is available for students to do on campus?

Whether you enjoy student government, whitewater rafting, debating, religious fellowship, or just socializing with others who share your interest, there is something for everyone at Georgia Tech. 14. Are International students eligible for Financial Aid?

International students are not eligible for federal or state financial aid programs. The Institute does, however, offer guidance to international undergraduate students who experience financial constraints. Please contact the Office of International Education (http://www.oie.gatech.edu) for more information. If your citizenship status should change at anytime while you are in the process of applying or attending GT, the Institute will re-evaluate your financial aid status.

15. Is the TOEFL exam required for any applicant?

The TOEFL exam is not required to be considered for admission.

16. Does Tech offer Financial Aid?

Georgia Tech offers both need and merit based aid to students through grants, scholarships and loans. The deadline for both the FAFSA and the Georgia Tech Financial Aid Form is March 1. 18. What is your student-faculty ratio?

The student-faculty ratio varies by major and class standing; however, the most common class size is 26 to 33 students.

20. Can I defer my enrollment term?

Per policy, Georgia Tech does not "defer" admission for students as an offer of admission is only valid for the term for which the student applied. Should you decide not to enroll in that term, you may request to re-open your file for a future term (up to one year from the term of original application) without having to re-apply. However, you should be aware that once a student has graduated from high school and enrolls in any college-level course work, that student must follow our transfer admission process (www.transfer.gatech.edu) and meet those requirements to be considered for admission.

21. Does Georgia Tech offer any special summer programs?

22. How can I withdraw or cancel an application?

Any requests to change information in your file should be submitted in writing. Along with the request, please be sure to include your full name, date of birth, Social Security Number or GT ID number (if available), and signature. This information may be sent by mail or faxed to 404.894.9511.

23. How do I re-apply to Tech after already being enrolled?

Because you had been previously enrolled at Tech, you would need to go through the re-admission process. Please contact the Registrar's Office ( www.registrar.gatech.edu or 404-894-4150) for further information.

24. What is the Academic Common Market?

The Academic Common Market is an interstate agreement for sharing educational programs and facilities that allows students to participate in selected programs not offered in their home states without having to pay out-of-state tuition charges. 26. What are the requirements to be considered a resident?

Classification of in-state, out-of-state, and international students for tuition payment purposes is determined by the Office of the Registrar, as governed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. 27. What are the options for attending the GT Savannah campus?

Georgia Tech Savannah (GTS) is available for transfer students only as only upper level courses in various majors are offered and not general education courses. There are five majors available at GTS: Civil, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, and Mechanical Engineering. Students may apply for direct transfer or as part of a GTREP partnership. Direct transfer applicants must meet the exact same requirements as transfer applicants to the Atlanta campus (www.transfer.gatech.edu) . For both direct and GTREP transfers, there is a high probability of the need for cross-enrollment at one of our GTREP partner schools (Armstrong Atlantic State University, Georgia Southern University, Savannah State University) for completion of general education and non-major degree requirements.

28. When do new transfer students register for classes?

All newly accepted transfer students register during orientation, not in earlier phases that are for current/continuing Tech students. Newly accepted students will be contacted by the FASET office for Atlanta orientation or by Georgia Tech Savannah staff for Savannah orientation.

29. Is housing available for transfer students?

For the Atlanta campus, housing is guaranteed for transfer students if certain housing deposit deadlines are met. (see www.housing.gatech.edu ) However, often the housing deadlines do not coincide with admission Document Deadlines and thus all students are strongly encouraged to research off-campus housing options. For the Savannah campus, there is no on-campus housing but a list of recommended off-campus housing is available online at http://www.gtsav.gatech.edu/go/students/student-services/housing/housing .

30. What are the requirements for Transfer Admission?

All guidelines and requirements for transfer admission consideration are found online at www.transfer.gatech.edu. This includes a Course Requirements by Major chart that outlines the specifically required courses (in terms of Georgia Tech course numbers) that must be completed at some other school before an applicant can be considered for admission to Tech.

31. Does Georgia Tech require letters of recommendation?

Within our regular admission process, we do not require or review letters of recommendation. If you are selected as a President's Scholar Semifinalist, you will be asked to submit recommendations for further consideration. However, until you are notified, it is not necessary to mail or request letters to be sent to our office.

The website also includes a link (under ‘Transfer of Academic Credit’) for the Transfer Equivalencies table where coursework from other schools can be looked up for transferability and thus applicability towards the specifically required courses. Prospective applicants should compare the results of their completed/planned coursework from the Transfer Equivalencies table with the Course Requirements chart. If a particular course or school is not listed on the table, then it has not yet been reviewed by Tech but could be deemed transferable.
