Laptops

Well,  I am looking for a new laptop and I was wondering what is the best to buy?  DELL or APPLE?

Re: Laptops

Ah, the endless debate..

I think it mostly depends on your major. Engineering classes may use a lot of CAD software, which as far as I know is not supported by Apple. From looking around campus, you see the management, liberal arts and psych majors using macbooks and all that. Most of the Engineering students use Dell.

Then again, all the computers in the library and your computer labs in your major building have the software there for you..

Re: Laptops

I must say I agree w/ the previous post, this is an endless debate, but as an Apple computer owner I thought I would present you with the other side of the story.

I have a Powerbook G4 15''(as in before intel macs were introduced) meaning I can't run Snow Leopard when it comes out(the next OS from Apple) and I have never once had a problem with having a mac and compatibility.  I do not use AutoCAD in my studies, and yes, that would require windows, but worst comes to worst you can install windows on your own computer.  There are plenty of library and other computer clusters on campus that all have AutoCAD on them too.

In the end its up to you, but I will say this.  Apple hardware can run OS X and windows, but Dell can only run windows.

Hope you enjoy your time at tech!

Re: Laptops

Macs are sleek and nice, but the aren't worth the pricetag to me.  Besides potential compatibility issues, macbooks are not water resistant--my freshman year roommate fried hers with a water bottle.

I know what you're thinking "Duh, it's a computer.  Electronics and water don't get along."  Very true, but both myself and a few other Dell owners have spilt water on our laptops and were able to power it down fast enough to keep it from short circuiting.  And after we were sure they had dried, we booted them back up & they worked fine.

There's some random, anecdotal food for thought.
