Choosing appropriate high school courses

I have a dilemma.  My counselor says that I need to take the Pre-Cal class labeled "Honors", followed by the AP Calc labeled "Honors".  However, the Pre-Cal and AP Calc class labeled "Advanced" has a teacher that has a much better record of AP scores.  The class labeled "Honors" is taught concurrently with the Excel Calculus by a teacher from our local University.  Most of the kids that sign up for that class usually end up not going AP but just doing Excel.  Past AP scores from that teacher have not been impressive.  What would you do?  We are registering now and I really want to be prepared for Tech.

Re: Choosing appropriate high school courses

My advice is to do what you feel will best prepare you for taking the AP Exam and concurrently giving you the best opportunity to perform well (basically, which will give you a better grade).  Since both seem to be Honors Level classes, they will most likely look the same on the transcript.  At the same time, taking a class that has more of a college feel to it might prepare you better for college level course work.

In my experience, students who take AP Calc and are eligible to receive college credit will still re-take Calc I in college just to get a feel for college classes.  Plus, they come with previous knowledge and have a opportunity to receive a high grade.

I've never heard of honors or non-honors AP Calc. Since they will probably weigh the same on your GPA (ask your couselor), take the non-honors one ... the one with the better teacher.

On the other hand I've also never heard of an "Excel" program. Who knows how good this is or what it's reputation is... however since you say past AP scores from kids who've taken that class are not impressive, I think we get an idea of how valuable the program is.
